US Marshals Capture Texas Man Wanted In Wife's NJ Motel Murder In Philadelphia: Prosecutor

A Texas man has been arrested in Philadelphia in the fatal shooting of his wife at a New Jersey motel, authorities said.

Steven Burgess, 38, of Spring, Texas, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, 30-year-old Ivy Morris, according to Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Runnemede Police Chief William Sampolski.

On Wednesday, Nov. 1, shortly before  2 a.m., officers from the Runnemede Police Department responded to the Days Inn Hotel for a report of a carjacking and a shooting.

Officers spoke with the male victim of the carjacking, who informed them that a man fired a handgun at him and had stolen his vehicle.

Officers then searched the hotel and located a female victim, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.  She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Burgess was arrested by the U.S. Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force – Camden Division, the U.S. Marshals Eastern PA Violent Crimes Task Force – Philadelphia Division, and the Philadelphia Police SWAT Team.

Burgess was being held in Philadelphia, pending extradition to New Jersey.  This is an active and ongoing investigation. Additional charges are pending.
